Located in the lower-central portion of the District of Columbia, the Metropolitan Police Department’s First District is home to the city's business and political centers. 1D, as it is known, includes some of our nation's most recognized and cherished landmarks, including the U.S. Capitol and Supreme Court, as well as some of the city's most interesting and diverse neighborhoods.
Because it has both a main district station and a substation, 1D is divided operationally into two areas: west and east. The western area comprises the Capitol; the downtown business district, including the DC Convention Center and the Capital One Arena; Chinatown; and the Southwest Waterfront. Most residences in this area are in the Southwest quadrant near the waterfront, although there is a growing residential population in such downtown communities as the Penn Quarter neighborhood.
The eastern part of the First District, which is served by the District 1 Substation, or 1D-1, includes the historic Capitol Hill neighborhood and the Washington Navy Yard. Capitol Hill is one of the oldest sections of the city, with many historic homes and buildings, including the Library of Congress, Eastern Market, and Union Station as well as the Capitol and Supreme Court.
