The Metropolitan Police Department’s Major Crash Investigations Unit is investigating a traffic fatality involving a bicyclist in Northwest.

On Tuesday, September 22, 2026, at approximately 1:04 p.m., Third District officers responded to the 1300 block of Rhode Island Avenue, Northwest, for the report of a crash involving a commercial box truck and a bicyclist. Responding officers located an adult male with critical injuries. DC Fire and EMS determined the male showed no signs consistent with life and pronounced him deceased on the scene.

The preliminary investigation revealed that the bicyclist was operating an electric bicycle without a helmet and was merging from the park at Logan Circle onto the 1300 block of Rhode Island Avenue, Northwest, on the wrong side of the roadway. As the bicyclist attempted to cross over to the correct lanes, he struck a commercial vehicle that had just turned off Logan Circle, Northwest. The bicyclist fell from the e-bike and was subsequently run over by the commercial vehicle.

The operator of the commercial vehicle remained on the scene, and no signs of impairment were observed. Members of the Motor Carrier Unit responded and conducted an inspection of the commercial vehicle, finding no out-of-service violations.

The decedent has been identified as 60-year-old Oludare Ayodele Adekoya, of Northwest, D.C.
