Sunday, May 19, 2024

Agents from the Force Investigations Team of the Metropolitan Police Department’s (MPD) Internal Affairs Bureau are investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred in the 2400 block of Virginia Avenue Northwest.

On Saturday, May 18, 2024, at approximately 10:38 a.m., Second District officers responded to the listed location for a welfare check. Responding officers called for the assistance of the DC Department of Behavioral Health’s Community Response Team to assist an individual in crisis. Community Response Team members determined the individual was an immediate danger to himself or others and needed to be transported for an emergency evaluation.

As MPD members attempted to handcuff the individual, he produced a knife and stabbed an MPD member. A MPD member deployed a taser at the suspect, which did not take effect. At that time a MPD member discharged their firearm, striking the suspect.

Officers rendered aid and called for D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services, which transported the suspect to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The injured officer was treated on scene and transported to a local hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

The suspect’s knife was recovered on the scene and is pictured below:

The suspect has been identified as 28-year-old Jonathan Jefferson, of Northwest, DC. He was placed under arrest for four counts of Assault on a Police Officer.

The involved officers have been placed on administrative leave, pursuant to MPD policy. Body-worn camera footage will be released pursuant to District of Columbia law (D.C. Official Code § 5–116.33 (c)(2)).

This officer-involved shooting remains under investigation by the Metropolitan Police Department Internal Affairs Division’s Force Investigations Team, which investigates all law enforcement officer-involved shootings in the District of Columbia. The United States Attorney’s Office will independently review the facts and evidence in the case.
