The Metropolitan Police Department’s Major Crash Investigations Unit is investigating a traffic fatality involving a pedestrian in Northwest.
On Thursday, September 3, 2026, at approximately 4:08 p.m., Fourth District officers responded to the 7700 block of Georgia Avenue, Northwest, for the report of a crash involving a pedestrian. Responding officers located an adult male suffering from life-threatening injuries on scene. The victim was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Five days later, on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, the pedestrian died from his injuries sustained in the crash. The pedestrian has been identified as 56-year-old Bernard Massey, of Silver Spring, Maryland.
The preliminary investigation determined that the pedestrian was standing on the east sidewalk in the 7700 block of Georgia Avenue, Northwest, and then ran into the roadway, midblock and outside the crosswalk. The pedestrian ran between a yellow school bus and a black sedan that were both stopped in traffic facing northbound in the left lane. As the pedestrian crossed the roadway, he entered lane 1 of the southbound lanes in front of a black 2025 Tesla Model Y that was traveling southbound. The Tesla struck the pedestrian. The driver called 911 and stayed on scene and complied with officers during the investigation.
No signs of impairment were observed from the driver. This crash remains an ongoing investigation.
