Seventh District Officers Honored with Achievement Medal

Friday, October 20, 2023

Three members of the Metropolitan Police Department’s Seventh District were honored with Achievement Medals for recovering multiple weapons and drugs.

On Sunday, September 17, 2023, Officer Anel Salkanovic, Officer Darren Powell, and Officer Tamia James were on patrol when they drove into a rear alley behind the 3600 block of Martin Luther King Jr., Avenue. They observed three vehicles parked in the alley with a small crowd congregating around them. Upon seeing the officers, one of the vehicles immediately fled.

The officers then approached the two remaining cars and initiated an investigation. During the course of their investigation, officers observed a firearm in one car and drugs in the other car, both in plain view. Officers then conducted a search of both vehicles, ultimately locating three firearms, a large amount of marijuana, and multiple bottles of a prescription drug. All three of the firearms had large-capacity ammunition feeding devices.

Two suspects, one man and one woman, were arrested on scene and charged with multiple drug and gun offenses.

“These three guns have been removed from our streets before they have a chance to hurt or kill anyone,” said Acting Chief Pamela A. Smith. “This is, once again, exemplary work by our officers, and I’m pleased to recognize their dedication and teamwork.”

MPD is dedicated to giving our officers the training and tools they need to defend, protect, and save the lives of the residents and visitors of the District of Columbia. For information on how to join the Metropolitan Police Department, please visit: https://joinmpd.dc.gov/
