MPD Officials Graduate with a Master of Arts in Security Studies

Wednesday, October 25, 2023

On September 22, 2023, Inspector Michelle J. Caron and Captains Dan Harrington and Jonathan Dorrough graduated with a Master of Arts in Security Studies from the Naval Postgraduate School, Center for Homeland Defense and Security (CHDS).

The Center for Homeland Defense and Security is located in Monterey, California. Since 2003, CHDS has conducted a wide range of programs focused on assisting current and emerging leaders in Homeland Defense and Security to develop the policies, strategies, programs, and organizational elements needed to defeat terrorism and prepare for and respond to natural disasters and public safety threats across the United States. The degree program requires 18 months of continuous enrollment and coursework and a thesis. It involves a significant commitment on the part of the participants and support from MPD. The courses are organized in quarters rather than semesters, with each quarter requiring two weeks in residence at the NPS campus. The remainder of the coursework is completed via network-based learning. The members spent an average of 20 hours per week during the network-based learning periods of study – reading assigned materials, participating in online discussions with faculty and other participants, and preparing papers and projects.

“I am pleased to congratulate Inspector Caron and Captains Harrington and Dorrough on their graduation from such an academically demanding program,” shared Acting Chief Pamela A. Smith. “They are examples of career excellence and role models to the men and women of the Metropolitan Police Department.”

All three had family and friends that attended the graduation ceremony and were very thankful for the love and support they received during this strenuous program.
