MPD Arrests Suspect in Northeast Shooting

The Metropolitan Police Department announces the arrest of a suspect in a Northeast shooting.

On Sunday, December 8, 2024, at approximately 9:25 p.m., Fifth District officers responded to the report of a shooting in the 700 block of 19th Street, Northeast. Officers located an adult male suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. The victim was transported to a local hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries. CCN:24190374

On Wednesday, February 5, 2025, as a result of the detective’s investigation, 24-year-old Leon Jones Jr. of Northeast, DC, was located and placed under arrest and a firearm was recovered. Jones was charged with Assault with a Dangerous Weapon (Gun), Unlawful Discharge Of A Firearm, Possession of an Unregistered Firearm, Possession of a Large Capacity Ammunition Feeding Device, Endangerment with a Firearm, and four counts of Destruction Of Property.

Additionally, detectives linked Jones to two additional offenses that occurred in this area:

Endangerment with a Firearm – On Saturday, December 7, 2024, in the 500 block of 21st Street, Northeast. CCN: 2418938

Unlawful Discharge of a Firearm – On Saturday, January 11, 2025, in the 1700 block of Benning Road, Northeast. CCN:25004705

The December 8th shooting remains under investigation. Anyone who has knowledge of this incident should take no action but call police at (202) 727-9099 or text your tip to the Department's TEXT TIP LINE at 50411. The Metropolitan Police Department currently offers a reward of up to $10,000 to anyone who provides information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for a violent crime committed in the District of Columbia.
