Youth Advisory Council (YAC)
The Metropolitan Police Department’s (MPD) Youth Advisory Council (YAC) is a youth-centered leadership and engagement initiative within the Youth and Family Engagement Division (YFED).
YAC provides young people with a platform to share their perspectives, advocate for themselves and their peers, and address issues impacting their schools and communities.
Through mentorship, leadership development, civic engagement, community service, and meaningful interactions with public safety officials and community leaders, YAC empowers students to build confidence, strengthen communication skills, and become advocates for positive change.
Members also have opportunities to participate in educational field trips, career exploration, leadership discussions, and community impact projects.
Who Can Participate on the YAC?
YAC is open to high school students throughout the District of Columbia who are interested in leadership, community service, youth advocacy, and making a positive impact in their communities. Students should be committed to attending scheduled meetings and participating in program activities.
Youth Advisory Board (YAB)
A small group pf YAC participants are identified as Youth Advisory Board members, and they meet regularly with the Chief of Police to discuss topics that focus on building trust, understanding perspectives, promoting engagement, informing policies to gather youth feedback, and educational opportunities offering students insights to law enforcement. Overall, the board serves as a bridge for communication, collaboration, and positive change within the community.
