Hiring MPD Members for Outside Employment

MPD members may engage in several types of approved outside employment, each with its own eligibility requirements, approval process, and scope of permitted duties. To help members and hiring entities understand these distinctions, the information below provides a brief description of each type of employment along with a link to detailed guidance and instructions.

  • Special Event
Special events are activities for which licenses and permits are required within the District of Columbia and where large numbers of persons may gather or participate.

  • Public/ABC Event
An establishment that holds any ABC License is eligible to hire an officer to work on the public space in the immediate area around the establishment.

  • Private Event
An establishment in the District of Columbia can hire an off-duty Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) officer for private property security through the MPD Outside Employment Program by independently recruiting officers and completing a written agreement. This is traditionally a longer term or re-occurring employment.
