
Through various partnerships around the city, the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) will provide opportunities for the District’s school-aged youth to enjoy an educational, fun-filled and safer summer. Get more information about summer programs below.

MPD Summer Programs
- Late Night Hype/Beat the Streets
MPD and the DC Department of Parks and Recreation organize an epic series of nighttime, carnival-style summer events in communities throughout the District featuring dancing, food, games, sports activities, live music by MPD’s Side by Side Band, and tons of other family and community activities. - Students Taking Another Route to Success (STARS)
This six-week summer program focuses on team building and self-awareness for at-risk youth selected by school resource officers during the school year. In partnership with the DC Department of Employment Services, STARS includes math, reading comprehension, drug and gang prevention/resistance, tours of the DC Police and Fire Departments, and exposure to DC Superior Court mock trials. With parental consent, youth are “hired” through the DC Summer Youth Employment Program. Ages 14-17. This six-week academy focuses on developing life skills and behaviors that are critical for responsible, successful adulthood. SYA keeps young people engaged in safe, fun, and positive activities during the summer months. MPD officers establish meaningful relationships and serve as role models and mentors. Ages 5–13. This summer employment program is for youth interested in law enforcement careers. Youth are hired through the DC Department of Employment Services and participate in filed trips exposing them to a variety of law enforcement occupations. Ages 14–17. National Night Out is a law enforcement event, held the first Tuesday in August of each year. This year, (August 6th) the Metropolitan Police Department will host a series of festive community events around the city on that night, related to this national celebration to include free food, entertainment and fun for all ages.
