The beat officer has always played an important role in policing in the District of Columbia. Today, patrol officers regularly step out of their cars and take to the sidewalk promoting public safety while, at the same time, getting to know residents and business owners in the neighborhood. Foot beats also play a special role in initiatives like All Hands on Deck (AHOD) and Operation Full Stride. In addition to foot patrols, the MPD employs new tactics like the summer crime prevention initiative to identify high-risk repeat offenders to prevent violent crimes and gang activity in specific areas.
