The Metropolitan Police Department’s Major Crash Investigations Unit is investigating a traffic fatality involving a bicyclist in Northwest.

On Saturday, August 29, 2026, at approximately 3:24 p.m., Second District officers responded to the intersection of 15th and M Street, Northwest, for the report of a crash involving two bicyclists. Responding officers located two adult males, one suffering from minor injuries and the other in critical condition. DC Fire and EMS responded to the scene and transported the critically injured male to a local hospital.

The preliminary investigation determined that a fixed-gear bicyclist was traveling westbound in the 1400 block of M Street, Northwest. As the fixed-gear bicyclist passed a solid red traffic light and entered the intersection at 15th Street Northwest, a Capitol Bikeshare electric bicyclist was traveling southbound through the intersection with a green traffic signal. The two bicyclists collided, ejecting both riders from their seats.

On Monday, September 21, 2026, despite all life-saving efforts, the operator of the Capitol Bikeshare electric bicycle succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The decedent has been identified as 59-year-old David Watts, of Northwest, D.C.
