Sixth District Commander

Jaron Hickman
Position/Title:
Commander, Sixth District

Sixth District Commander Jaron Hickman

Jaron Hickman has served as commander of the Metropolitan Police Department’s Sixth District since January 2024, when he was promoted to the position by Chief of Police Pamela A. Smith.

Commander Hickman began his MPD career in September 2001 as a patrol officer the Seventh District, where he gained experience in the Auto Theft Unit and as a Field Training Officer. He later transferred to the Crime Scene Investigations Division, and in 2010 he earned the distinction of MPD Crime Scene Search Officer of the Year.

Hickman developed his policing and leadership skills—and earned awards and recognition—through a steady rise up the ranks and in assignments in key positions throughout the Department. He led the Sixth District Crime Suppression Team and supervised a newly formed Criminal Interdiction Unit in MPD’s Narcotics and Special Investigations Division, which focused on identifying and addressing robbery patterns throughout the city. He also led detective squads in the Homicide Branch; patrol operations in the Sixth District; and the Critical Incident Response Branch in the Special Operations Division, overseeing day-to-day operations of the Emergency Response Team, the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit, the Domestic Security Operations Unit, and the Canine Patrol Unit.

A lifelong resident of Ward 8, Hickman graduated from Ballou High School and served four years of active duty in the United States Army before joining the Police Department. He also graduated from the 21st Century Police Leadership program, an intensive course designed to foster, train, and empower law enforcement leaders and inspire lifelong learning.
