Officer Killed in the Line of Duty

Circumstance:

On July 4, 1904, during the fireworks display, three soldiers from Fort Myer were incommoding on the Aqueduct bridge. Officer Smith told the soldiers to move on but they refused. As Officer Smith struggled with one of the soldiers, another soldier, Samuel Young, drew a 38 caliber Colt, and shot Officer Smith in the stomach. Officer Smith died four days later from his wounds.

Officer Mellen caught Samuel Young trying to flee, at 15th and Pennsylvania Avenue, NW.
