Officer Gawen and Officer Sutton were riding bicycles on patrol duty at 7th and Q Streets, NW, when Officer Sutton heard a noise from behind and saw Officer Gawen lying unconscious in the street. Officer Gawen died on the scene from head injuries. The cause of the fall was unknown, but thought to be road debris.
