Kevin Kentish is currently the commander of the Criminal Investigations Division (CID), where he oversees investigative units such as the homicide, sexual assault, NIBIN, and district detective units.
Kevin Kentish joined the Metropolitan Police Department in 2010. After graduating from the Academy, he was assigned to the Fifth District as a patrol officer, where he served for four years. In 2015, he was transferred to the Narcotics and Specialized Investigation Division, where he was tasked with investigating various drug complaints throughout the city. Later in the year, he was promoted to investigator and assigned to the Seventh District Detectives Unit, where he was tasked with investigating various misdemeanor and felony crimes.
He was promoted to sergeant in March 2016 and assigned to the Fifth District Detectives Unit. Later that year, he was transferred to the Fourth District Detectives Unit, where he oversaw various district-level investigations. In November 2018, he was transferred to the Homicide Branch, where he oversaw homicide and death investigations.
In June 2019, he was promoted to lieutenant, where he served with the Third District for five months before being transferred to the Criminal Investigations Division, Homicide Branch, in November 2019. During his time as lieutenant in the Homicide Branch, Kentish supervised various types of criminal/death investigations, including homicides, suspicious deaths, special victim cases, suicides, and natural death cases.
Commander Kentish was promoted to captain in May 2021 and assigned to the Fourth District for one month before being transferred to the Youth and Family Engagement Bureau, Youth and Family Service Division in June 2021. While at the Youth and Family Service Division, he served as the Deputy Director and supervised missing persons investigation, the Juvenile Process Center, sexual assault and abuse investigations, the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) task force program, and the Youth Intervention and Prevention Unit.
In December 2021, he was transferred to the Criminal Investigations Division, Homicide Branch, where he served as the branch commander. The Homicide Branch is responsible for handling every homicide and death investigation in the city. During his time, he was responsible for six fresh-case squads, special victim units, cold case/major cases, MPD members assigned to the Capital Area Fugitive Task Force (CARFTF), and the MPD Arson Task Force.
In November 2023, he was promoted to the rank of inspector and remained at the Homicide Branch.
In April 2023, Chief of Police Pamela A. Smith promoted Kentish to commander of the Criminal Investigations Division.
Commander Kentish holds a bachelor’s degree in human biology from The State University of New York at Albany. Additionally, Commander Kentish completed the D.C. Leadership Academy and the Department of Homeland Security Leadership Academy session 12. In 2022, Kentish was named "Captain of the Year" and in 2023, he was named "Inspector the Year."
