MPD Investigating Officer-Involved Shooting

Agents from the Force Investigations Team of the Metropolitan Police Department’s (MPD) Internal Affairs Bureau are investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred Monday night.

On April 1, 2024, at approximately 8:52 p.m., investigators from the Violent Crime Suppression Division’s Robbery Suppression Unit were in the 2100 block of Bladensburg Road, Northeast, when they observed an altercation.

The investigators exited their cruiser and attempted to stop a man they observed in possession a firearm. The man started running, and investigators began running after him. Investigators gave loud verbal commands ordering the man to show his hands. The man did not comply and appeared to turn towards the investigators. At that time, an MPD investigator discharged their firearm multiple times, striking the man.

Investigators rendered aid and called for D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services, which transported the man to a local hospital with serious injuries.

The suspect’s firearm was recovered on the scene and is pictured below:

The suspect has been identified as 31-year-old Deion Hinnant, of Northeast, DC. He was placed under arrest for Assault on a Police Officer, Carrying a Pistol without a License, Possession of an Unregistered Firearm, Possession of Unregistered Ammunition, and Possession with Intent to Distribute a Controlled Substance.

The involved investigators have been placed on administrative leave, pursuant to MPD policy. Body-worn cameras were activated, and body-worn camera footage will be released pursuant to District of Columbia law (D.C. Official Code § 5–116.33 (c)(2)).

This officer-involved shooting remains under investigation by the Metropolitan Police Department Internal Affairs Division’s Force Investigations Team, which investigates all law enforcement officer-involved shootings in the District of Columbia. The United States Attorney’s Office will independently review the facts and evidence in the case. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is assisting with the investigation.
