Traffic Fatality at New York Avenue and North Capitol Street, NE

A 43-year-old man died of his injuries.

The Metropolitan Police Department’s Major Crash Unit is investigating a fatal vehicular crash which originated at the intersection of <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /?>New York Avenue and North Capitol Street, NE.

On Monday, July 26, 2010, at approximately 4:20 am, a 1993 Honda Accord was traveling east on New York Avenue NE at a high rate of speed. The vehicle entered the intersection of North Capitol Street NE from the left lane and collided with a 2007 Lexus ES350 which was in the center lane. The Accord then turned into the west bound lanes of the unit block of New York Avenue NE striking a 2008 ChryslerTown and Country head on.


The operator of the Honda Accord suffered massive blunt force trauma from the collision and was pronounced dead on the scene by personnel from the DC Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. The operator of the Lexus did not receive any injuries. The operator of the ChryslerTown and Country was transported to a local area hospital and released with minor injuries.


The decedent is identified as 43 year-old James Derek Huges of the 9300 block of Dubarry Avenue, Lanham, MD.


The investigation is ongoing.
