Traffic Fatality on Michigan Avenue, NW

Monday, April 10, 2006

On Sunday, April 9, 2006, at approximately 12:51 am, a 2005 Chevrolet Monte Carlo occupied by three persons was traveling at a high rate of speed westbound on Michigan Avenue, NW. Reportedly, the Chevy was racing another vehicle.

In the 100 block of Michigan Avenue, NW, the driver lost control of the Monte Carlo. The vehicle mounted the curb, struck a utility pole, rotated counterclockwise and struck a guardrail, flipped over, slid across two lanes, and struck another utility pole.

The operator, who has been identified as 28-year-old Demont Mooney, of the 4600 block of Hunt Place, NE, was transported to the Washington Hospital Center's MedSTAR Unit, where he was pronounced dead. The other two occupants of the vehicle, whose identities have not been released, sustained apparently non-life-threatening injuries.

The crash remains investigation by members of the Metropolitan Police Department's Major Crash Unit.
