Traffic Fatality in the 4000 Block of South Capitol Street, SW

At approximately 8:55 pm, on Friday, February 3, 2006, police were called to the 4000 block of South Capitol Street, SW, for the report of two pedestrians struck. Upon arrival police located 2-year-old Darnia Switzer, of the 5200 block of 70th Place, in Hyattsville, Maryland, and 14-year-old Stanley Jones, of the unit block of Chesapeake Street, SE. Both were taken to Children's Hospital.

As a result of her injuries Darnia Switzer was pronounced dead at 9:40 pm. Stanley Jones was transported to Children's Hospital and admitted with apparent non-life threatening injuries.


The preliminary investigation indicates that Stanley Jones was carrying Darnia Switzer in his arms while crossing the roadway at the intersection in the 4000 block of South Capitol Street, SW, when a Ford Crown Victoria struck both victims.


The vehicle was being operated by 29-year-old Anthony Antwan Gay, of the 2300 block of Good Hope Court, SE. He was charged with Negligent Homicide.


The case is under investigation by members of the department's Mayor Crash Investigations Unit.
