Traffic Advisory for Congressional Funeral for McCain

On Friday, August 31, 2018 and Saturday, September 1, 2018, the events related to the funeral of Senator John S. McCain, III, will take place in the District of Columbia. On Friday, August 31, 2018, Senator McCain will lie in state at the United States Capitol Building. On Saturday, September 1, 2018, the Congressional Funeral for Senator McCain will take place at the National Cathedral. In conjunction with these events, there will be several street closures that motorists should take into consideration:


The following street will be posted as Emergency No Parking from Friday, August 31 at 12:00 pm to Sunday, September 2, 2018 to 12:00 pm:


  • East curb lane of Wisconsin Avenue, NW from Massachusetts Avenue and Woodley Road, NW


The following streets will be closed on Thursday, August 30 at 11:00 pm to Saturday, September 1 at approximately 11:00 pm:


  • East Capitol Street, NE/SE, from Second Street, NE/SE, to First Street, NE/SE
  • First Street, NE/SE, from Constitution Avenue, NE, to Independence Avenue, SE


All street closures and listed times are subject to change based upon prevailing or unexpected conditions.


The public should expect parking restrictions along the street and should be guided by the posted emergency no parking signage. All vehicles that are parked in violation of the emergency no parking signs will be ticketed and towed.


Motorists could encounter possible delays if operating in the vicinity of this event and may wish to consider alternative routes. The Metropolitan Police Department and the D.C. Department of Transportation also wishes to remind motorists in the vicinity of this event to proceed with caution as increased pedestrian traffic can be anticipated.
