Friday, April 7, 2006

Shortly after 8 this morning, Friday, April 7, 2006, Third District police officers were called to an apartment at 334 V Street, NW, for a domestic assault. When officers entered the apartment they located a female who had been beaten about the face. They also encountered a male subject who had allegedly assaulted her. At some point, the man reportedly grabbed one of the officers and an altercation ensued. The altercation continued on the sidewalk outside the apartment at which time the male subject allegedly came at the officers with some type of wooden club. It was at this point that 32-year-old Officer Mary Matthews, a 10-year-veteran with the department, drew her service weapon and fired striking the subject in the left leg.

The male subject, identified as 43-year-old Charles D. Taitano, of the V Street address, was taken to the Howard University Hospital. He has been charged with Assault on a Police Officer While Armed and Aggravated Assault (domestic violence). The injured female was taken to the Washington Hospital Center for apparent non-life threatening injuries. Her name is being withheld because she is a witness in this case.

Officer Matthews has been placed on routine administrative leave with pay pending the investigation being conducted by members of the department?s Office of Professional Responsibility?s Force Investigations Team and detectives of the Third District.
