The investigation into this pedestrian fatality is continuing.

The Metropolitan Police Department has announced that the female pedestrian who was fatally struck on Saturday, March 6, 2010, at the intersection of <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /?>14th Street and Constitution Avenue, NW, has been identified as 51-year-old Debra Ann Schiebel of the 1300 block of Vermont Avenue, NW.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /?>

The owner of the striking vehicle contacted police on Saturday night, during the course of the investigation. At this time, it appears that the driver of the vehicle was unaware that a pedestrian had been struck.  Police have located the truck which is a 2004 Freightliner tractor with a 2001 Phelan flatbed. At this time, there are no charges pending against the driver.

The preliminary investigation has revealed that the pedestrian was in the roadway crossing against the light when she was struck. The pedestrian was also wearing a walkman with headphones.

The Metropolitan Police Department would like to thank our partners in the media and the community for their tremendous assistance in publicizing this case.

The circumstances surrounding this pedestrian fatality continue to remain under active and ongoing investigation by members from the department’s Major Crash Investigations Unit.

This incident is the fifth traffic fatality in the District this year and the third pedestrian fatality.
