Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Major Crash Investigations Unit are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding a pedestrian fatality that occurred in the Unit Block of M Street, SE.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /?>
A preliminary investigation indicates that at approximately 10:21 am on Thursday, April 29, 2010, a 2007 Chevy GMC truck was reportedly traveling eastbound in the Unit Block of M Street, SE, from <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /?>Half St, SE, when it struck a pedestrian who had suddenly entered the roadway and was apparently not in a marked crosswalk area. As a result of the impact, the pedestrian suffered multiple traumas and was subsequently pronounced dead on the scene by a representative from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for the District of Columbia.
The pedestrian has been identified as 42-year-old Amy Ellen Polk of Takoma Park, Md.
The 53-year-old male operator of the striking vehicle, which remained on the scene, suffered no apparent physical injuries as a result of this accident.
At this time no charges have been placed in connection with this case which remains under active investigation by members from the department’s Major Crash Investigations Unit.
