Officer Injured and Arrests Made in Northeast Incident

Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Fifth District announced that three juveniles have been arrested in connection with an armed carjacking that led to a vehicle pursuit, in which an officer was injured.

At approximately 7:00 pm on Saturday, March 9, 2013, officers pursued a red Dodge Challenger that was taken in an armed carjacking at 11:00 am in the 500 block of 16th Street NE. The vehicle was stopped in traffic at 295 and Benning Road NE.  The vehicle then fled onto the sidewalk striking an officer, who had approached the vehicle on foot. The officer sustained injuries to his lower extremities. At that time, the officer’s partner discharged his service weapon at the striking vehicle.

The suspects continued to flee, bailed out of the vehicle in the 500 block of 24th Street, NE, and were apprehended. Police arrested two male juveniles and a female juvenile. One of the males sustained a gunshot wound to the leg.

The injured officer and suspect were transported to area hospitals where they were treated and released. 

The driver of the vehicle was charged with Assault with Intent to Kill, Unauthorized Use of a Vehicle, and Assault on a Police Officer.  The other two suspects were charged with Unauthorized Use of a Vehicle passenger, and Assault on a Police Officer.

The Metropolitan Police Department’s Internal Affairs Division is investigating the shooting.
