MPD and The DC Police Foundation Hosting the “Shop with a Cop” Event at a DC WALMART

Wednesday, November 28, 2018

The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) would like to announce the Shop with a Cop event taking place on Thursday, December 13, 2018. Approximately 100 pre-selected children ranging in age from 5 to 17, will partner with an MPD officer to shop for holiday gifts at the WALMART store. Members of the news media are invited to attend. This event is made possible by a grant from WALMART Corporation and the Washington DC Police Foundation. In addition, WALMART will be providing lunches for all participants of this event.

The Shop with a Cop program fosters strong community relationships by pairing public safety officials with in-need youth to shop for the children's families during the holidays. Preselected children and their families will gather at the Faith Moravian Church, 405 Riggs Road, NE, to be paired with officers.

“This program gives kids in our area the opportunity to see police officers in a different light and fosters a positive relationship between the two for years to come,” said Chief of Police Peter Newsham. “It’s also one of the best ways we can show our community that the Metropolitan Police Department is living up to its motto: ‘We are here to help’.”
