Homicide in the 1700 Block of Mississippi Avenue, SE

Case is promptly closed with an arrest.

Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch have announced that an arrest has been in made the first homicide of 2010.  At approximately 2:35 am on Sunday, January 3, 2010, detectives from the Homicide Branch with the assistance of members from the Seventh District arrested 44-year-old Terrance Dominic Brooks of Southeast Washington and charged him with Murder Two While Armed in the death of Zachery James Funke. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /?>

At approximately 11:05 pm on Saturday, January 2, 2010, officers from the Seventh District responded to a residence in the 1700 block of <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /?>Mississippi Avenue, SE, for the report of an unconscious person. On the scene, members learned that an adult male had been transported from that location to an area hospital prior to their arrival. The victim, who was suffering from apparent multiple stab wounds, was subsequently pronounced dead at 12:37 am.

The victim in this case has been identified as 22-year-old Zachery James Funke of Frederick, Maryland.

Chief of Police Cathy L. Lanier praised both the dedicated work of her members and again the cooperation of the community in promptly closing the first homicide of 2010. “We will not rest upon our laurels as we enter a new year.  We indeed must continue to working diligently in bringing to justice those who choose to commit murder in the District of Columbia.”
