A subsequent investigation by members of the Police Department's Violent Crimes Branch indicated that at about midnight that same day, Donte Cook reportedly became involved in an altercation, outside of the home, with his 57-year-old father, Andrew Cook, also of the Bruce Place address.  During the altercation, Andrew Cook allegedly struck Donte in the head with a flashlight.  Donte was then taken into the home and found dead later that morning.

The Medical Examiner's Office ruled the case a homicide due to blunt impact head trauma.  Andrew Cook was charged with Murder Two While Armed.
