Fatality in the 300 Block of New York Avenue, NEAt approximately 9 am, on Wednesday, March 29, 2006, police were called to the gated entrance of a tunnel running beneath the 300 block of <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 /?>New York Avenue, NE,. Upon arrival they located the body of 67-year-old Clarence Evans (pictured at right), whose last known address was the 400 block of D Street, NW.  DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services personnel were called to the scene but found no signs consistent with life. He was taken to the DC Office of the Chief Medical Examiner and pronounced dead. An autopsy conducted by the Medical Examiner's Office indicated that Mr. Evans sustained massive multiple blunt force trauma injuries to his chest, back and pelvic area that were consistent with someone who had been struck by some type of motor vehicle. It was also concluded that Mr. Evans's injuries were not immediately fatal.

The case is currently under investigation by members of the MPDC's Major Crash Unit. At this time, investigators do not believe Mr. Evans sustained his injuries where his body was located. Police are investigating the possibility that Mr. Evans was struck at another location, and his body removed from that location and placed near the tunnel entrance.
