Arrest Made in the Rufina Hernandez Murder Case

Members of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force arrested 45-year-old Andres Lopez in connection with the November 7 homicide on Georgia Avenue, NW.

Detectives assigned to the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch have announced that an arrest has been made in the homicide of Rufina Hernandez, who was shot to death during the commission of a robbery of her store on Saturday, November 7, 2009.  On Thursday, November 19, 2009, at about 2 pm, members of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force arrested 45-year-old Andres Lopez pursuant to an arrest warrant.  Mr. Lopez was arrested, without incident, in the vicinity of 4th and Kennedy Streets, NW and then was transported to the Homicide Branch.  He has been charged with Felony Murder while Armed.  

At around 9 pm on Saturday, November 7, 2009, officers assigned to the Fourth District responded to La Casa De Morata, located at 5421 Georgia Avenue, NW, to investigate the report of a shooting.  Upon arrival, they located the storeowner, identified as 51-year-old Rufina Hernandez of Hyattsville, Maryland, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to the face and neck.  DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department personnel responded to the scene and transported the victim to the Washington Hospital Center’s MedSTAR Unit where she was pronounced dead. 
Reportedly, two suspects, at least one of whom was armed with a handgun, robbed the business establishment at gunpoint.  After obtaining an undetermined amount of US currency, one of the suspects then shot the storeowner before the culprits fled from the store.
