Arrest Made in Homicide in the 2000 Block of 16th Street, SE

Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch have announced an arrest has been made in the fatal shooting of Frederick Darnell Ard which occurred in the 2000 block of 16th Street, SE.


On Saturday, November 14, 2009, at approximately 1:11 am, officers from the Seventh District responded to the 2000 block of 16th Street, SE, to investigate the report of a shooting. Upon arrival they discovered an adult male suffering from apparent multiple gunshot wounds. The victim was transported by personnel from the D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department to an area hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. 


The decedent was identified as 42-year-old Frederick Darnell Ard of Suitland, MD.


On Thursday, June 28, 2012, 39-year-old Raymond Lee Smith of Oxon Hill, MD, was arrested by members of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force pursuant to an arrest warrant charging him with Second Degree Murder While Armed in connection with the shooting death of Frederick Darnell Ard.
