In Memory of Officer Hubert W. Estes

Date of Death: May 16, 1947

Officer Hubert W. Estes was killed in the line of duty on May 16, 1947, at 6th and F Streets NW while attempting to apprehend a subject who had just murdered an employee of the Board of Admissions and Grievances of the DC Bar Association located in the court building at 4th and F Streets NW.

Officer Estes was 51 years of age. He was appointed to the MPD on June 1, 1922. He was assigned to the old First Precinct.

Suspect, Daniel Williams, entered the court building and shot two civilians when he became enraged over a $125 refund. After the shooting, Williams fled down the street.

Officer Estes and an unarmed guard approached Williams and tried to wrestle the gun away from him. Williams then shot the guard in the mouth and Officer Estes twice in the chest.

As Officer Estes was dying, he drew his weapon and shot the suspect four times.
