Second District Commander
Melvin Gresham currently serves as the Commander of the Second District at the Metropolitan Police Department. He was promoted to the rank of commander on April 6, 2015 by Chief of Police Cathy Lanier, and assigned to the Second Police District, where he previously served as a captain. In his role, he is responsible for seven Police Service Areas, including Chevy Chase, Cleveland Park, Foggy Bottom, Georgetown, Palisades and Spring Valley neighborhoods, to name a few.
Commander Gresham first joined the Metropolitan Police Department in October 1984 and has served in numerous patrol and specialized assignments throughout his 30 year career. He has been assigned to the Fourth, Third, Fifth, and Seventh Patrol Districts, and has served in the Narcotics Branch and the Special Operations Division.
A native of Prince George’s County, Maryland, Commander Gresham attended public schools in P.G. County. He majored in Criminal Justice at the University of Maryland’s University College and has taken courses in pre-law.
