Michael Jones Sr. currently serves as inspector in the Cadet Corps.

Inspector Michael Jones Sr. joined the Metropolitan Police Department in August 2005, and began his career in the Sixth District following his training at the Metropolitan Police Academy. Inspector Jones has served in all ranks, first achieving master patrol officer in 2012 and then sergeant in 2014. Jones attained lieutenant in 2018, captain in 2021, and Inspector in 2024.

During his career with the MPD, Inspector Jones has worked in a variety of posts. In addition to patrol work as an officer, master patrol officer, sergeant, lieutenant, and captain, Jones was also assigned to the Youth and Family Services Division, where he was responsible for leading youth outreach programs and initiatives, such as Youth Creating Change, Summer Youth Academy, and Reaching New Heights. Jones was later promoted to lieutenant and in 2019 he was assigned to Cadet Corps Branch, where he was responsible for the organization, policy, education, recruitment, and development of over 120 young cadets and staff.

Upon his promotion to captain, Jones was appointed as the Commanding Officer of the School Safety Division. As the Commanding Officer of the School Safety Division, Inspector Jones worked with agency partners, stakeholders, schools, and community leaders to ensure robust measure were implemented for student safety at school and during their travels. In the Summer of 2021, Inspector Jones also led a Summer Crime Initiative area, where he focused on building partnerships with residents, community stakeholders and other government agencies. Inspector Jones focused intensely on connecting community members with jobs, services, and domestic violence resources. Captain Jones has assisted in the creation and implementation of several training initiatives for officers through the Metropolitan Police Academy.

In September of 2022, Jones was tasked with leading the Recruiting Division and overseeing the background investigations of all MPD applicants. During that time Inspector Jones championed a host of innovative ideas to increase the pipeline of eligible candidates. Inspector Jones also implemented a variety of changes to the background process based on the new laws that went into effect, such as implementing a process for green card holders. Inspector Jones increased the efficiency of Prospect days and implemented robust timelines to maximize efforts of the background investigators.

In August of 2023, Jones returned to Patrol in the Seventh District. Where he oversaw the administrative offices, Specialized Units, and daily deployment operations. Inspector Jones has implemented innovative ideas through the use of technology into the Patrol arena. His ideas has allowed for fluent communication throughout the ranks for daily deployment operations and officer scheduling. He was promoted to inspector in June 2024, and working in the Seventh District until he moved to the Cadet Corps in October 2024.

Inspector Jones holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from Walden University, a Master of Professional Studies degree in Security and Safety Leadership from George Washington University, and a Master of Arts degree in Homeland Security from the Naval Post Graduate School. Additionally, Inspector Jones completed the DC Leadership Academy, as well as DCHR’s Certified Public Manager program obtaining certificates in Strategic Project Management, Leadership, and Municipal Government from George Washington University. Inspector Jones is a devoted family man and loves spending quality time with his wife and four kids.
