Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department's Major Crash Unit are investigating a traffic fatality that occurred on Tuesday, July 4, 2023, in the 900 block of Eastern Avenue, Northeast.
The preliminary investigation revealed that at approximately 12:34 a.m., an adult male was riding a silver bicycle westbound in the 900 block of Eastern Avenue, Northeast. At the same time, a black Mercedes was travelling eastbound in the 900 block of Eastern Avenue, Northeast, at a high rate of speed. The Mercedes crossed the double yellow line and drove into oncoming traffic, striking the bicyclist. The Mercedes did not stop and fled eastbound on Eastern Avenue. DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene and after finding no signs consistent with life, the bicyclist remained on the scene until transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
The decedent’s identity is being withheld pending next of kin notification.
