Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Major Crash Unit are investigating a traffic fatality of a pedestrian which occurred in the 500 block of 6th Street, NW.
On Monday, October 1, 2012 at approximately 8:50 am, units from the First District responded to the 500 block of 6th Street, NW to investigate a traffic crash involving a pedestrian. The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2011 Dodge Charger was traveling westbound on D Street, NW, and stopped at the red light at 6th Street, NW, when the female driver of the vehicle had a medical emergency. The vehicle began to enter into the intersection. The passenger attempted to gain control of the vehicle; however it mounted the sidewalk striking the pedestrian. After the vehicle struck the pedestrian, it continued traveling northbound on the east sidewalk and came to a rest after colliding with a tree.
Personnel from DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services transported the driver and the pedestrian to an area hospital, where the driver was treated and released and the pedestrian was pronounced dead.
The decedent is identified as 60-year-old Rhett Leverett of Northwest, DC.
The investigation is ongoing.
