At approximately 9:45 last night, Wednesday, June 14, 2006, members of the department's Youth Investigations Branch's Internet Crimes Against Children Unit (ICAC) arrested 31-year-old Tarun Makkar of Gurgaon, India.  He was staying at a hotel in Gaithersburg, Maryland, while in this country on business. Mr. Makkar was arrested, without incident, in the 1300 block of Adams Street, NE, and charged with violation of Title 18 of the United States Code, Traveling With the Intent to Engage in Illicit Conduct With a Minor.

Mr. Makkar allegedly utilized the Internet to make contact with what he believed to be a 13-year-old female and reportedly made arrangements to meet her. When he arrived at the agreed-upon location, he was met by officers who placed him under arrest.  He was arraigned today in United States District Court.

Members of the ICAC unit will enter into "chat room" conversations in an attempt to intercept those attempting to entice underage females and males in an effort to combat the growing problem of Internet predators.
