Subject Taken Into Custody in Connection with a Series Carjackings and Street Robberies

Metropolitan Police are investigating a series of carjackings and robberies that occurred between Saturday, April 15, 2006, and Monday, April 17, 2006, which are possibly connected. One subject has been taken into custody in connection with these crimes.

The ongoing investigation now indicates that at approximately 1:40 am, on Saturday, April 15, an individual was robbed by two suspects while in the 700 block of <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /?>Newton Street, NW. His white Mazda 626 was taken during the robbery. Sometime between 9 am and 6 pm, on Sunday, April 16, a black Jeep Liberty was stolen from the area of 12th and Varnum Streets, NE. At approximately 11:45 pm, on Sunday, April 16, an individual was robbed while walking in the 600 block of Fairmont Street, NW. A black SUV was used by the suspect(s) in this robbery. 

 

At approximately 2 pm, on Monday, April 17, an individual walking in the 5000 block of South Dakota Avenue, NE, was robbed.  A black SUV was involved in this case.  At approximately 2:15 pm the same day, three individuals in a tan Chevrolet Trail Blazer were robbed in the 2400 block of 4th Street, NW, by at least two subjects. A black SUV was involved in this case, and the Trail Blazer was taken during the robbery. At approximately 2:22 pm the same day, a carjacking/robbery occurred in the 4300 block of Harewood Road, NE. During the robbery the victim's white Nissan Armada was taken.  A black SUV and Trail Blazer were used in this case. 

 

At approximately 2:25 pm the same day, an individual was robbed and his Chevrolet Tahoe taken while in the 5200 block of North Capitol Street, NE. Two dark colored SUVs were utilized during this robbery. At approximately 2:30 pm the same day, an individual was robbed while walking in the area of 3rd and Quackenbos Streets, NW. A black SUV was used in this case. And at approximately 3:29 pm the same day, an individual was robbed and his silver colored Volkswagen GTI taken in the 600 block of Michigan Avenue, NE, by several subjects operating a black SUV. The suspects in these cases are generally described as black males in their late teens or early twenties. 

 

Anyone with information about these cases is asked to call police at (202) 727-9099. The department currently offers a reward of up to $5,000 to anyone who provides information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for any robbery committed in the District of Columbia.

 

At approximately 2 pm, on Tuesday, April 18, Commander Larry McCoy of the Third District, while on routine patrol, observed a Chevrolet Trail Blazer that was carjecked in one of the cases that occurred on Monday, April 17. Commander McCoy arrested the subject in the vehicle. The subject's name is being withheld pending positive identification and placement of charges.
