Shortly after 8 this morning, Friday, April 7, 2006, Third District police officers were called to an apartment at 334 V Street, NW, for a domestic assault. When officers entered the apartment they located a female who had been beaten about the face. They also encountered a male subject who had allegedly assaulted her. The altercation continued on the sidewalk outside the apartment at which time the male subject allegedly came at the officers with some type of wooden club. It was at this point that 32-year-old Officer Mary Matthews, a 10-year-veteran with the department, drew her service weapon and fired striking the subject in the left leg.
The male subject, identified as 43-year-old Charles D. Taitano, of the V Street address, was taken to the Howard University Hospital.
