Person of Interest Sought in Multiple Thefts in the Third District

The Metropolitan Police Department is seeking the public’s assistance in identifying and locating a person of interest wanted in connection with three thefts which occurred in the Third District. In each incident, an adult male who is making a purchase hands a clerk a $100 bill, disputes the change he receives, confuses the clerk and leaves the business with the change and the $100 bill.

On Sunday, October 6, 2013, at approximately 5:55 pm, a male entered an establishment in the 2000 block of 18th Street, NW and made a purchase with a $100 bill. When receiving the change, the male disputed the change that he received, engaged the clerk in conversation confusing the clerk. The male retrieved the original $100 bill and the change and then left the business. The person of interest was described as being a black male with a medium complexion, 60 to 65 years of age, short hair or bald.

On Wednesday, October 9, 2013, at approximately 3:30 pm, a male entered an establishment in the 2600 block of Georgia Avenue, NW and paid for a purchase with a $100 bill. When receiving the change, the male indicated that he received incorrect change engaged the clerk in conversation and confused the clerk. The male retrieved the original $100 bill, then left the scene with the change and $100 bill. The person of interest was described as being a black male, with a medium complexion,  at least 40 years old, 6’0 to 6’3” tall.

On Tuesday, October 29, 2013, at approximately 6:30 pm, a male entered an establishment in the 1600 block of 17th Street, NW and made a purchase with a $100 bill. When receiving the change, the male engaged the clerk in conversation and retrieved the original $100 bill. The male then left the scene with the change and $100 bill. The person of interest was described as a black male, with a medium complexion, approximately 60 to 65 years of age, 5’8” to 6’0” in height.  He was last seen wearing a plaid shirt.

The Metropolitan Police Department recommends staying alert and aware. If you observe the person of interest or suspicious behavior, call 911. If possible, write down the description of the person of interest and note his direction of travel. Do not follow the person or take any other action.
