On Tuesday, December 22, 2009, at approximately 8:30 am, a 2008 Chevrolet Impala was traveling northbound on 12th Street crossing Rhode Island Avenue, NE when it collided with a 1997 Ford F250 Truck that was traveling westbound on Rhode Island Avenue, NE.

The impact caused the re-direction of the Ford F250towards the northwest corner of the intersection of 12th Street and Rhode Island Avenue, NE. Consequently, the truck mounted the northwest curb, grazed a utility light pole, collided with a pedestrian standing on the sidewalk, and then mounted a stone retaining wall.

He was transported by DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department personnel to the WashingtonHospitalCenter’s MedSTAR Unit where he was pronounced dead at 8:55 am.  He has been identified as 30-year-old Avalos Diaz of the 1200 block of Randolph Street, NW.

The driver of the Chevy Impala was treated for minor injuries at an area hospital and released.

The operator of the Ford F250 was not physically injured.

This is the 31st traffic fatality for 2009. The investigation is ongoing. No further information is available at this time.
