On Thursday, June 3, 2010, at approximately 6:50 pm, the operator of a 2006 Dodge Charger was traveling southbound in the 1500 block of <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /?>Montello Avenue, Northeast, when the vehicle struck a child who had emerged between two parked cars to retrieve a ball that had rolled out into the street.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /?>
The child, 4 year old Deanthony Holman of the 1600 block of Monetllo, Avenue, NE, was severely injured in the collision and was transported by ambulance to Children’s Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The operator of the striking vehicle remained on the scene of the accident and at this time no charges are pending. This case is being investigated by Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Major Crash Unit.
The Police Department wishes to remind the public to use caution when playing near the street, and to remind children to never run out into the street before looking in both directions to ensure it is safe.
Motorists must also be alert for children, particularly during the summer months.
