On Tuesday, July 11, 2006, Chief of Police Charles H. Ramsey announced a Crime Emergency due to an increase in violent crimes.
The following are the statistics for the first seven days since the initiation of the Crime Emergency from July 11-17:
- Total arrests for this period of 2006 were 1,240, including 96 juveniles, compared to 976, including 58 juveniles for the same period in 2005.
- Total violent crimes (Homicides, Robberies, Sexual Assaults & Assaults with a Dangerous Weapon) for this period of 2006 were 171, compared to 171 for the same period in 2005.
- Total curfew violations for this period of 2006 were 228, compared to 82 in 2005.
- Total guns recovered for this period of 2006 were 77, compared to 60 in 2005.
