Members from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Special Victims Unit are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a child in <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /?>Northeast Washington, DC. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /?>
At approximately 2:19 pm on Wednesday, June 23, 2010, Fifth District Officers and DC Fire and Emergency Medical Personnel responded to 1100 Michigan Avenue NE for the report of an unconscious child in a pool.
The child was transported by personnel from the DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department to an area hospital where she was admitted in critical condition. She was subsequently pronounced dead.
The child in this case has been identified as 6-year-old Yiana-Michelle Ballard of Northeast Washington, DC.
The cause and manner of death in this case will be determined pending an autopsy to be conducted by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for the District of Columbia.
