Chief Lanier Issues Statement Regarding Multiple Shootings in Edgewood Terrace

Statement from the Metropolitan Police Department

Chief of Police Cathy L. Lanier issued the following statement regarding the multiple shootings that occurred on July 28, 2007:

"My concern goes out to the families of the victims of last night's shootings.  It is unfortunate that there are members of our community who seem intent on violence.  Last night's shootings are particularly troubling when officers in the Fifth District held a peaceful community event in Edgewood on Saturday as part of the All Hands on Deck initiative.  Violence of any kind in our neighborhoods will not be tolerated, and I have directed officers to increase patrols in Edgewood Terrace, including extending the hours of some day and evening patrol officers to 11 hour shifts.  The Metropolitan Police Department's Special Operations Division will support the patrols by providing canine units and horse mounted officers.  Every effort is being made to apprehend the two suspects believed connected to last night's shootings.  Officers will go door-to-door in the neighborhood, to speak to residents who may have seen or heard anything that would be helpful to investigators in making arrests.  No detail is too minor."

Anyone with information is asked to call (202) 727-9099.
