Arrest Made after Recruit Officer and Companion Robbed

At approximately 3:35 am, on Saturday, July 15, 2006, a 23-year-old male and a female companion were walking in the 2400 block of Ontario Road, NW, when they were approached by a lone male who indicated that he had a gun.  The subject demanded money and received a small amount of cash.  It was at this time that he allegedly threatened the couple if they did not give him more money.  The male victim, who happens to be a recruit officer with the Metropolitan Police Department, fearing for his companion's safety and in an effort to stall for time, agreed to take the suspect to a nearby Automated Teller Machine (ATM).

While in the 1700 block of Columbia Road, NW, the recruit officer observed uniformed members of the United States Secret Service and told the suspect that he would receive no additional money.   It was at this time that the suspect struck the recruit officer in the face.  The recruit officer then tackled the suspect and held him until the arrival of the uniformed Secret Service officers.

The name of the recruit officer is being withheld because he is a complainant and witness in this case.  Arrested was 21-year-old John Antonio Taylor, whose last known address was in Alexandria, Virginia.  He was charged with Robbery/Fear and Simple Assault.
