Circumstance:

An off-duty officer was outside watering his lawn when he heard his roommates engaged in an argument and shots fired. The roommate used the off-duty officer's weapon to shoot his wife three times. Officer Johnston was the first uniformed officer to arrive on the scene. As he entered the house, he stuck his head around the corner and the suspect shot him twice in the head. He died on the scene.

The suspect surrendered soon after and was transported to the hospital for treatment of injured he suffered after falling down a flight of stairs upon his arrest.
