Curtis Clay

Department of Real Estate Services (DRES)

Curtis Clay was appointed interim deputy director of the Construction Division for the Department of Real Estate Services (DRES) in February 2011. He serves directly under the Director and manages a six-year $700 million dollar capital improvement program, which includes the rehabilitation of existing real property facilities and construction of new facilities supporting the District.

Prior to his appointment, Mr. Clay served as the Administrator and was responsible for the day-to-day operations along with overseeing all project managers. He was the Senior Project Manager for the Historic Eastern Market Renovation project which was completed both on time and under budget. His philosophy is that “a successful project is only as successful as a successful project manager” and that it is important that his teams have all the necessary tools to achieve success which is measured by completing projects on task and on budget.

Mr. Clay is a licensed Architect and has a Masters of Architecture from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a Bachelors of Architect from Howard University. He also served as an adjunct assistant professor of architecture at Howard University from 2004 – 2009 where he taught courses in history and theory of Architecture. He is also a member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), National Council of Architecture Registration Boards (NCARB) and the Construction Management Association of America (CMAA).
