Maurice T. Turner Jr., Metropolitan Police Academy

The Metropolitan Police Academy provides training services to the members of the Department primarily and to members of outside agencies, so they can become more capable, knowledgeable, and professional employees serving their organizations and the District. Beginning in 1999, the Academy began delivering mandatory annual professional development training for sworn members of the police department.

MPA consists of five branches:

  • Academic Services Branch
  • Continuing Education Branch
  • Specialized Training Branch
  • Firearms Branch
  • Media Productions Branch

Services provided to department include:

  • Initial/recruit training
  • Professional development courses
  • Specialized career development courses and certification
  • Academic counseling

Services provided to other police jurisdictions and public agencies include:

  • Inter-agency training courses
  • Law enforcement certifications
