Take the danger of weapons out of your home safely. If you have concerns about handguns, pistols, and other weapons that you think may be in your home, we can help. The Metropolitan Police Department’s SafeHomes Program is a way for you to safely alert law enforcement to the possibility of illegal weapons in your home without question or prosecution.
Why SafeHomes?
It can be a challenge to raise young people in today’s society, especially as grandparents and single parents struggle to maintain their households, hold down a job, and attend to other demands. Sometimes our efforts to bring our children up in a safe environment are met with unexpected hurdles as young people are sometimes swayed by elements of crime or violence.
About SafeHomes
In an effort to help parents and guardians faced with this challenge, the Metropolitan Police Department has created the SafeHomes initiative. You now have the option to voluntarily request that specially-trained members of the MPD conduct safety checks for weapons in your home without risk of arrest. A visit to your home is kept confidential and will not be shared with Immigration services, the DC Housing Authority, or the DC Public Schools. This program is available by scheduled appointment only throughout all seven police districts in the District of Columbia.
What happens when a firearm is found?
If weapons are recovered, they will be tested and destroyed if the weapons are not found to be linked to any other crimes. If a weapon is linked to prior crimes, an investigation will be initiated to determine who is responsible.
